Re usable Canning Lids

Hi All you preservers out there, recently there has been a lot of talk on some of my other groups about the Tattle re usable canning lids. some people on the group have been testing them out and although they had a few hiccups they have on the whole been very pleased with the results. It seems from the conversations that many people are concerned about the decline in availability of the mason lids and so are wanting something more user friendly long term. The tattler lids have been available for many years but not popular. As they have not been that popular in the past cost is still higher than the readily available use once and throw away mason lids. I shall look forward to these lids becoming available in Australia eventually as their use fits in much more with my personal philosophy of re usable products etc. Any way the link is -

Contrary to all the rules I have re-used both FV rubber rings and Ball lids. I assume that as long as they achieve a proper seal they are OK. If one fails to seal I will throw it away, but it hasn't happened yet. I am always careful to open the jars without damaging the rings/lids.

Well I have to say that I have also re used my Mason lids. Some however have failed to seal. If the lid hasn't achieved a good seal by the end of the 2nd reprocess then out it has gone. Many people do re use their lids even though it isn't considered "safe" with out ill effects. I still err on the side of caution myself though and prefer to use a new lid each time because when I have re used my Mason lids I mark them so I know it is a re used one. I have also found that on occasion while they achieve good seals initially, over time in storage these seals have deteriorated so that when I open the jars to use the contents I find it loose which is an indication it was failing (there was a leak somewhere).

I know that in the end we each find and use a method which we are happy with. As an aside; please regularly check the seals on all your jars regardless of the type used as any one of them can have a seal failure during their storage time regardless of whether they are new or re used ones.

And can attest to worst smell ever from Pea and Ham soup that the seal came loose in the heat! OMG can almost still whiff it just thinking of it.

I looked at the lids Kathleen, they do look interesting and I like the plastic... yes I'll buy if they became available here, and probably more will eventually.
